Body Image Task

Secret Eaters (series 3: episode 2)
http://www.channel4.com/programmes/secret-eaters/4od

This programme follows people all over Britain, and shows how their secret eating habits have caused them to gain weight. The presenter states that being in a relationship is the single biggest cause of weight gain. The start of the programme shows an older married couple from Essex, who want to find out why they have been putting on so much weight. They are a middle aged couple, and both state that the do not feel that they eat much, therefore, they do not understand why they have been putting on so much weight. They introduce the couple and show the woman in the kitchen cooking, and the man sitting on the sofa, this shows how their are creating stereotypes, and showing how this couple live up to the usual stereotypes given to men and women.
This programme uses a lot of visual codes to help aid the problems it is addressing. This shot is used to first introduce the husband. The use of a close up on his stomach and thighs help to aid the point that this man is overweight, and they are showing how much weight he has put on through eating the junk food that he does. This show wants to address the issue of secret eating, and wants to shock the audience by showing just how much you weight you can put on, and how unhealthy the majority of the populations diet is. So by using close up camera angles such as this, the audience will realise how much of a problem excessive eating is, and how eating in this way can lead to looking like this. This programme appeals to the audience, as they know the audience will take certain uses and gratifications from it, for example, they may find is entertaining, or may find personal identity within the programme, by being able to relate to their problem.

Masterchef (series 10: episode 1)
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b03zdx14/MasterChef_Series_10_Episode_1/

This show presents body image in a very different way to secret eaters. although this show is not solely focused on the issue of excess eating, much like secret eaters was, it does discuss food and this programme presents body image indirectly. At the start of the programme we are introduced to the six contestants, all wanting to be crowned the winner, and straight away we are able to see that these people are of all shapes and sizes. Instead of talking directly about how eating is affecting body image, this programme presents body image, but displays it as being normal for people to be of different sizes. They are all competing for the same thing, and nobody has an advantage due to their weight.

The Reception Theory.

  • Preferred - The preferred audience for Eastenders would be women between the ages of 16 to 60+ because women are most likely going to watch this programme for entertainment or personal identity, as they can relate to the people in the soap, and most people will be home from work etc and able to watch it due to the time that it is on.
  • Oppositional - The oppositional audience for Eastenders would probably be men between the ages of 16 to 40, as they might not be interested in soaps, and may choose to watch other types of programmes such as documentaries or sports programmes.
  • Negotiated - The negotiated audience for Eastenders would be men between the ages of 16 to 60, as they may not choose to watch it, but may do so anyway because their partner etc may like to watch it. The negotiated audience would also be teenagers younger than 16, as they may not gain any uses and gratifications from in such as entertainment or personal identity, because they cannot relate to any of the people in the show.

MATCH OF THE DAY.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b040ln6b/Match_of_the_Day_2013_2014_05_04_2014/

  • Preferred - The preferred audience for match of the day would be males between the ages of 16 to 50, as these people are stereotypically going to be more interested in football, and may watch the programme as a part of social integration and a source of information.
  • Oppositional - The oppositional audience for match of the day would be women of a similar age, as they are usually going to be less interested in the content of the programme, and may not seek any uses and gratifications from it.
  • Negotiated - The negotiated audience for match of the day would be women that may take a lot of interest in football, so they might like to watch it for entertainment and information. People of a higher social status may also take a negotiated reading to match of the day, as they may be a lot more career orientated and may be less likely to take interest in sports such as football.

THE VOICE.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b03wryyn/The_Voice_UK_Series_3_Blind_Auditions_7/

  • Preferred - The preferred audience for the voice would be males and females between the ages of 16 to 40, as they may like to watch the programme for entertainment and people between these ages are also of a similar age to the judges and those who are often on the show, so therefore they may gain personal identity from watching the programme.
  • Oppositional - The oppositional audience for the voice could possibly be males, as they may only watch it if their partner likes to, but would not do so out of personal choice.
  • Negotiated - The negotiated audience for the voice would be the older generation such as 70+, as they may enjoy watching the programme as a form of entertainment, but they may not be able to relate to any of the acts on the show and may not be able to relate to their dream of being in the music industry.

The Cultivation Theory.

The Cultivation Theory looks at the TV as a social agent, and studies the effect of TV exposure. The Cultivation Theory states that high frequency viewers of TV are more susceptible to media messages and the belief that they are real and valid. For example, heavy viewers are exposed to more violence, and are therefore affected by The Mean World Syndrome. This is the belief that the world is actually a far worse and dangerous place than it actually is. Heavy viewers take away such strong messages whilst watching TV, and therefore begin to think that real life is like that. The Cultivation Theory states that when people view certain behaviours and attitudes, they will start to replicate these in their everyday life.

The Cultivation Theory can be applied to the representation of age. For example, older people watch more tv and therefore are more likely to be susceptible to the messages. An example of this is that young people are constantly shown to be involved in violent or dangerous acts on the news or on other shows, so therefore older people stereotype all young people as violent and aggressive, because they believe what they have seen on the television. The television has blinded them to the fact that just because a few young people may have been involved in that crime, doesn't mean that all young people behave in the same way. This also gives older people the impression that the world is a mean place in which there is nothing but violence, and this is the given impressions because the news and other programmes constantly show the bad things that young people do, rather than the brilliant achievements some young people have achieved.

http://www.theguardian.com/news/datablog/2012/jul/04/riot-defendants-court-sentencing

This article in The Guardian about the 2011 Riots shows young people in a very negative light, and shows how older people may believe that young people are all violent. This article talks all about the riots and gives facts about how many people were sentenced or imprisoned. It used facts and statistics to reinforce the point that there were 34 children between the ages of 10-17 in which were remanded in custody, and this reinforces the stereotype of young people being violent as older people will view this as a lot of young people are to blame for these riots and that young people seem to always be involved in dangerous stories. By being constantly exposed to stories like this means that old people start to become afraid of most young people, thinking that they all must behave in this way. This leads to many older people becoming even too scared to leave their own homes.

http://www.theguardian.com/science/head-quarters/2013/sep/19/neuroscience-psychology

This stereotype is reinforced a lot through several media forms, as you are constantly seeing news stories and articles about violent acts involving young people, and we cannot really blame the older generations for stereotyping us in such a way, as the media has created and reinforced this stereotype so often that is it so rare to hear of a young person achieving good things, and even when they do, it now seems to go unnoticed. The reason for violence in young people is also accounted for by the use of video games, so therefore, older people think that this must be true because there is a reason for young people acting in this way, so therefore they go along blaming things such as video games and violent TV shows. This article explains how there is a correlation between violent video games and the violence in children. However, this article is constructed to give facts, so there is no content to show that violent video games actually don't have any effect on most children that play them.

Representation of Age.

Young People:
Young people tend to be represented very negatively in the media. Most people tend to view teenagers as either violent and aggressive or as party animals. Young people are represented through lots of different media forms, and tend to be portrayed in the most negative way through television programmes. For example, Sun, Sex and Suspicious Parents portray young people in a very stereotypical way. Young people are shown to be lazy and wild, and are shown to be rule breakers that don't live up to their parents expectations. This show in particular is constructed so that we tend to only see the worst of the protagonist's behaviour. We are shown their bad behaviour with them drinking and sleeping around, and we are never shown and real calm bits in which the young people are behaving on their holiday. This show is also constructed in such a way that there is a definite contrast between how they act around their parents in their everyday life, and how they behave once they are on their holiday and the way in which this is done makes their behaviour even more shocking to the viewer, because they have already thought them out to be well behaved. The parents in this show also live up to their stereotype of being all worried and forever wanting to know where their children are and what they are doing. The cultivation theory also applies to this show, as heavy viewers in which are influenced quite a lot by the television, would see this as the right way to behave, and as the show portrays the drinking in partying in such a way that it is considered normal to be drinking to that extent and treating people in this way.

Old People:

Old people tend to be represented in quite a negative way also. With more people living into a greater age, more strain is being placed on taxes and health care. We tend to view older people are venerable and as people who cannot take care of themselves. Most articles about older people tend to present them in such a way that they live up to this weak and fragile stereotype. This article reinforces this stereotype as it explains about how due to the fact that we have an ever ageing population, pension costs are placing a lot of strain of the government and that a retirement crisis is brewing. This article starts to blame the recession and even goes as far as to say that World War 2 had an impact. This shows the reader how this problem has been ongoing for a while now, and is not a newly emerging thing. This article also goes onto explain how this is a problem in several countries, and this shocks the reader with the fact that this problem is not becoming a global thing. This article presents old people in a very stereotypical vulnerable way, as we stereotypically believe that older people rely on others to get by, and how they are too fragile to look after themselves, and this articles reinforces that by making older people look like they cannot get by alone, and we are then made to feel sorry for these older people because they are being blamed for all this strain on the government. However, this article is constructed in such a way that it does not take into account any other problems that may be causing strain on the government. Older people are very often presented in this way throughout different media forms such as newspapers and news on the television, and this makes people think that all old people live up to this stereotype and that all old people are to blame for the problems with the government.

Representation of Gender.

Sexualized/objectified females.

This advert for Calvin Klein's secret obsession fragrance shows a female in a very sexual and objectified way. The model is covered by nothing but her arm and part of a sheet. There is no relevance to the perfume by her being naked, yet this image is used to attract an audience of both males and females, as males will like the image and women will think that 'if they buy this perfume, they will look like this'. This image uses quite soft and bright lighting to connote a sense of innocence and purity, and the fact that she is naked also makes her seem very natural. The bright lighting also contrasts with the product to make the perfume bottle stand out more. However  this is sending out a very negative ideology to women, as they think that they need to buy this perfume and look like this in order for men to like them.

Domestic females.

The television show 'The Simpsons' shows a typical domestic woman in which is portrayed through the character of Marge. Marge is often seen to be cooking or cleaning whilst wearing an apron. She is also looking after the kids and her husband, and this portrays the stereotypical domestic view of a woman. Marge is always looking after the children and taking care of her husband, and this shows how the media is still trying to portray this idea of the perfect domestic woman to the audience, and this makes women think that they should still act in this way. However, this could be said to be outdated as now more and more men are taking on women's roles and sharing the burden of a household.

Post-feminism.

In the music video 'Wannabe' by the Spice Girls, the Spice Girls are a great example of post feminism, and show just how empowered women can be. Post feminism is all about how women are becoming equal to men and are trying to surpass men's achievements. The Spice Girls are all about women and women's equality to men. In this video they are all together showing just how confident they are in themselves, and how they don't need men. Even the lyrics to the song portray this same message, as they sing about how if you want to be their man, you've got to get with their friends. The Spice Girls were also one of the first girl bands to live up to male bands, as they have achieved a lot and have managed to surpass many males achievements. This sends a good and strong message to girls about how all girls should stick together, and you should put your friends before any man. It also sends out a good message about the empowerment of women, and how women are becoming ever more equal to men, and this makes girls believe that they can be their own person, and do not have to rely on men for their achievements.

Dominant/aggressive male.

In the music video 'Give me everything' by Pitbull, Pitbull is portrayed as a very dominant and aggressive male. Pitbull is seen to be surrounded by girls, almost displaying the fact that 'he could get all of these girls'. This shows him as quite a dominant male as all eyes are on him and he is commanding the attention of all of these women. The women are also seen to be dancing around him and giving him lots of attention, and his bold stance also makes him look very masculine and dominant. This music video sends out the message that men are the dominant gender and that women are inferior, and should therefore be lead by a man and do what he says. This message is also portrayed through the lyrics of the song, as he is telling girls to 'give him everything' in which makes women think that they have to answer to men, and should do whatever a man says to do. This is a stereotypical view of a male, in which makes women believe that they have to answer to men, and that men are more dominant.

Male Stereotype.

A good example of a stereotypically masculine male is James Bond. James Bond is presented as quite a masculine character and this is shown through his attitude and looks. He is always dressed quite smartly in suits and ties and his hair is always perfect, this gives people the perception that he is smart and masculine, yet this is also reinforced by his strong stance and attitude within the film. He presents an image of a very strong and independent man. He is always seen to be driving fast cars and carries a lot of weapons in and this makes him seem very masculine and also makes him more attractive to the ladies. Men are stereotypically believed to have fast cars and be very muscular and masculine and the character of James Bond reinforces this stereotype and presents men as being strong and bold. So therefore, men will then believe that because they are represented in such a way, that they have to act in this way also. James Bond has been around for many years so this is a great example of how this type of male stereotype is old and has not just come about in the last few years.

Metrosexual/New Man.

An example of the metrosexual new man is presented through this cover of 'People magazine' featuring Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. This magazine cover takes a complete spin on the stereotypical masculine man, as he is playing with his child. This sends out a new message, as people now think it's acceptable for men to take on some of the jobs so that women don't have to do them all. This presents men in a very good light, as he is seen to be playing and looking after their child whilst his wife is having a bit of a break, he is taking some of the burden off his wife. This is a good ideology to send out, as men will now think that it is more and more acceptable to be doing some stereotypically female jobs and tasks, and we are able to learn that the roles of women have changed, and women do not have to stick to this stereotypical domestic view of a women.

Mock Exam - How To Improve.

Audience Question.
To improve my audience question, i think that i need to revise key terminology and try to incorporate solid examples into my answer. I need to be able to justify my answers more and try to include theories in which help me to explain why that media text would be targeted at that audience.

Representation Question.
To improve this question, i need to find solid examples of how males and females are represented within the different media forms, and i need to be able to explain why they are represented in this way and what effect that has on the audience.

Revision and Study.
To improve my grade i think that i need to revise more. I am going to do this by allowing myself a designated couple of hours every week in which i can go over theories and find solid examples of how males and females are represented within the media. I am then going to put these into practice by trying to apply them to a set question. I also need to make sure that i manage my time so that i have enough time to answer all of the questions to a high standard.

Coursework.
To improve my coursework, i need to edit my images and experiment slightly with the layout of my inserts to see if they would look better when presented in another way. I also need to make sure that my report is completed and i have made all of the improvements suggested by David.

The Representation of Men.

MEN'S VOGUE represents men as very powerful. They tend to use pictures of well known and credited male celebrities. This image of Will Smith makes him look very powerful and dominant. They do this through the clothing he is wearing, as he looks very business-like and sophisticated, and this reflects how professional he is as an actor, and also in keeps with the fact that vogue is a high end magazine. The black coat makes him look powerful and the colours of his clothing also fit in with the colour of the text used on this front cover. The coat also makes him look like he is covering up something and this links to one of the tagline that says 'power marriage...fatherhood and saving the world..again', this plays on the roles he has played in films as well as aiding the main image in which makes him look powerful and almost like a superhero. The blue background is quite soft which contrasts with the masculine black fonts used for the text. The fact that some of the text is also gold shows that the magazine is high end as gold is quite a rich colour and you associate gold things as being expensive. The lighting used on the image of Will Smith is quite soft and looks quite natural. This along with the blue background makes it loo as if they have taken this photograph of his outside and as though the photograph isn't staged. by using these things men will be drawn into this magazine because they want to know what Will Smith does and how he does it, tis magazine appeals to upper class men who are maybe leo trying to achieve the same sort of success as Will Smith.

MEN'S HEALTH MAGAZINE represents men as muscular and eye candy for women. This representation of men makes them think that they need to look like this in order to get girls and if they buy this magazine, they will find out how to look like this. The colours used on this magazine are quite masculine reds, blues and blacks and the bold text also aids the fact that this magazine is aimed at men. However, the colours and fonts used contrast with the main image as the image and background are quite light and the big smile that the model is showing represents a kind of purity and also shows his happiness and confidence with the way he looks, and this is what other men want to achieve. His hair is perfect and his body language is quite relaxed almost as if the photograph hasn't been staged. The fact that this man is also not a celebrity also targets men as they can relate to this man and they will think that he got this body through doing the workouts in this magazine, rather than a personal trainer.

OK! MAGAZINE represents Steven Gerrard in a very good light, presenting him to be a family man that is very much involved in his family's life. The fact that this issue was out around christmas with a background of decorations also helps to aid our views of him, as christmas is very much a family time and he is obviously spending his time with his family. The colours used are mainly reds and yellows, these colours are typically associated with this magazine, but also link well with the christmas theme throughout this issue. His wife is wearing a red dress with connotes romance and also fits in with the christmas theme, and Steven is wearing a casual pair of jeans and jacket making his seem very down to earth. He has his children around him which also shows us that he is a family man that spends a lot of time with his children and his wife. The way they are sitting looks quite staged but the way they are smiling looks genuine, and as Steven Gerrard is a well credited footballer, it appeals to people because they want to read about his life and you don't often get an insight into footballer's lives away from the pitch.

The Representation of Women.

VOGUE magazine is a high end magazine that represents women as powerful and as role models. They often choose female celebrities in which the girls of this generation look up to and aspire to be like. The women on the cover often have good reputations and careers. Beyonce is a role model to many girls and the fact that she is alone on this cover shows that she is a strong and independent woman that young girls look up to. Beyonce is known for her talents and not how little she can wear. Vogue magazine often has female celebrities quite covered up wearing high end fashion, rather than using nudity to sell their magazines. The photograph of Beyonce uses soft lighting to portray her innocence and purity and the fact that she is wearing black and white which are quite plain colours, rather than vibrant clothing or barely any clothing, shows that she is quite down to earth and is inspirational. Her clothing also looks very business like and professional, reflecting herself and the fact that she is very professional in what she does.

SHAPE magazine shows female celebrities quite exposed, wearing only underwear or swimwear. This is to show how good they look and this will make girls want to buy the magazine because they want to know how they can look like that, and they think that if they buy this magazine then it will teach them how to get this body. Britney is a well known pop star, yet is not known for being innocent, unlike the connotations of the white swimwear that she is wearing. Britney is a very controversial celebrity that has battled with her weight many times, so this makes the readers think that if she can look this good than so can i. Britney's face looks airbrushed and the soft lighting makes her look innocent and almost perfect, making young girls believe and think that this is what they have to look like. The position in which she is standing also makes her look very confident about her body, and she is not covering any part of it with her arms etc, and this makes women think that they want to learn how to be this body confident.

NUTS magazine is a magazine geared towards men and it does this by using sexualised images of women and female celebrities to attract their attention. The image of Georgie Porter is very sexualised and the way that she is leaning down, does not only show more of her body, but it also makes her look more innocent and helpless, as though she needs a man to control her and tell her what to do. The lighting used makes her look flawless and this gives mean unrealistic perceptions about what real women's bodies look like. The lack of text may show how men do not buy these sorts of magazines to read the articles, but also the simplicity of the article titles almost stereotype men by making you think that they are simple so that men can understand them. Also, rather that saying 'TV's sexiest women' they have said 'TV's sexiest babes' and by using the word babes, this has almost degraded them straight away as sex objects rather than independent women.

CD Cover - Final Drafts.

My band's album cover.

This is my band's final cd cover draft. I based the front of this cd cover on the front cover of James Arthur's debut album cover. I used basic images with split lighting and i photographed Jordan and Tom who in which share a similar dress sense, which is also very much of a mod look so i thought that they would look good on this cd. I tried to make my background look like polaroid images and i thought that this would give it more of an old school feel.

CD Cover - Final Drafts.

My solo artist album cover.

This is my final draft for my solo artist album cover. I tried to give it an indie/urban feel and based my draft on Jake Bugg's debut album cover as i liked the simple layout and photographs used on that album, and i also liked the vintage feel given to it by the use of sepia tones on the photographs.

Proposal for pre-production.

What my idea's are...

For my pre-production final drafts, i am going to create one CD cover for an urban solo artist, and another CD cover for a new style mod band. I want to create my solo artist cover based on Jake Bugg's debut album cover, and i am going to base my band's album cover on James Arthurs album cover, and i am also going to try to incorporate elements from older mod albums.

I will be creating all of my pre-production on photoshop.

Taking my original photography.

I am taking my photographs of Jordan for my solo artist album cover, and then i will be taking photographs of Jordan and somebody else for my band's album cover.

I will be taking photographs of Jordan in the studio and in natural, outdoor urban setting, so that this reflects the style of music on the album. I will also be using the studio for my band's photographs and may use other outdoor settings. I will position my models in various different poses and experiment with different lighting and angles to see what looks most effective.

I will be using the studio for the majority of my photographs and will also be using outdoor settings for other photographs.

I will be taking my studio photographs mainly in lesson as i can then hire out the studio and a camera, and whatever photographs i do not manage to take in lessons, i can take in my free periods, or in my free time at weekends.

I am choosing to take photographs in the studio, as i think that i will be able to create a good use of lighting, and i also think that portraits look effective on the front of CD covers. Also, i am taking some outdoor photographs as i think that using natural and more urban settings will also reflect the urban feel of my album, as well as making it look more professional.

I have asked my models in advance so that i know that they will be available for me to take photographs of. I will be shooting my photographs in the most convenient times for both me and them, and i also have to arrange my shoot around what time i can use the studio etc, and i also have to shoot my outdoor photographs on days with good weather conditions.

CD Cover Drafts.

This is my draft based upon Jake Bugg's debut album cover. I want to create a CD cover for a country artist in which is similar to Jake Bugg. I based this on his original cover for his debut album, as i liked the simplicity of it, and liked the fact that the images were in sepia tones. I created this draft on photoshop, and experimented with the different colours and fonts to see which worked best. This draft is going to influence my final draft because i want to create a debut CD for a new country artist, and i want to base my image on this one of Jake Bugg by trying to capture the same setting, and i think that the natural lighting and setting makes it look effective. It gives him a bit of a background city and almost shows everyone where he comes from and that he's a city boy.

This is another draft based upon an Oasis album cover. For my second final draft, i want to create a CD cover for a new British band/duo that dress and look like people did in the MOD era. I experimented in photoshop with different fonts/colours and layouts and finally decided on this as i thought that the font looked most like the fonts used on other albums by Oasis and i used a basic picture and colour scheme as i thought that this would fit well if i made it into a 'very best of' album, because it was basic but effective. I am going to use this draft as inspirations for my final draft, as i think using a simple image such as this, would work really well. I also like the font used as it is quite bold and is similar to the font used in most other Oasis CD's, and this could work for my final draft as i want to create a CD cover for a band similar to Oasis and that would have a similar look and sound.

This is my third draft, which is actually based upon 'the vaccines' album cover, but i decided to create it with a picture of the band 'Of monsters and men', as i thought that this image worked well in this layout. I experimented on photoshop with different layouts and fonts and finally decided on this one as i thought that it looked most effective, the images are clear and simple and the writing stands out. I thought that this would by an option for my CD cover based on my solo artist, as i think that it stands out and is an effective and basic layout. The images used on the front and back cover link well together, yet are different, and the image on the back cover uses leading lines, almost leading you into the tracks that are on the CD. I think the font fitted in well with the whole layout and colour scheme, and i thought the idea of having a border around the main image on the front cover made the image stand out more.

Coursework-Textual Analysis.

CD Covers.

This Oasis album cover uses a simple picture with natural lighting. The image is just a simple one of two men walking past each other down a street, yet this is symbolic of the of the two men that make up the band Oasis. They have also used a slow shutter speed which allows us to see the movement of the two men walking. The fact that we don't know who these people are of where they are etc, may link to the title of the album (what's the story) morning glory? and this could show that we don't know what the story is behind these two people, but the songs on this album explain their story. The font used in the bands name is lower case but the white writing on the black-boxed background makes it stand out, and the fact that it is framed makes it seem like it is trying to make a statement.

This Jake Bugg album cover is very simple but effective. It is a simple picture of the artist himself. It is close up using a low aperture setting to create a shallow depth of field in which means that the buildings behind him are out of focus, making him stand out more in contrast to them. He isn't looking directly at the camera, but his expression and the direction he is looking, leads you into the picture and leaves a feeling of mystery surrounding him. He has his coat zipped up to show not only his style of clothing, but also how he might shield himself from others. The font is in black and bold capitals in which almost makes a statement about who he is. It is also underlined to emphasise it. The sepia filter used on this album makes it look a bit more antique and older, and this reflects the older type of country music that he sings.

This James Morrison album cover is effective but basic. He, like Jake Bugg, is also not looking directly at the camera and his expression and eyes are leading us into the picture. This cover also uses a low aperture setting to create a shallow depth of field, meaning that the artist stands out a lot more. His clothing is quite modern and the fact that he is sitting by himself on the side of the street almost makes us think that he is watching the world go by, an he is thinking about all of the things that are happening to him. This also fits in which the album title 'songs for you, truths for me' in which shows us that these songs are how he has expressed himself and how that this album is a release of his thoughts and feelings, and the fact that the image is of him sitting on the sidewalk may show how he is thinking about all of these things. The font used on his name is in capitals but is in a softer font than the Jake Bugg album title, this means it stands out but isn't as harsh or in your face as Jake Bugg's.

This Arctic Monkeys album cover uses a simple image and colours in an effective way. The image is of  single man smoking a cigarette, using a black and white filter. This image may show how this album is about not caring and being free. The man is smoking yet looks like he is slightly smiling, which may show how he is enjoying life and smoking makes his feel better, and smoking is usually used to calm people down and to make them feel chilled, and this may reflect how this bands music makes it's listeners feel.  The fact that he is wearing a plain white t-shirt also makes him stand out from the black background. The artist/album title is in an angle box that is white, and this contrasts and stand out from the background. The font of the artists name is in lower case and in quite a funky and cool font, which may reflect the band's style and music, as their music might be laid back and chilled, but quite fun listening too.

Male orientated magazine cover.

Car.

The masthead is in a large and bold font, also coloured grey with shows that this magazine is aimed towards a male audience.  The masthead is in lower case font which is quite bland and basic because it is obvious that this is the magazine you would buy if you wanted to look at cars, so they don't need it to stand out as much. We can also tell straight away that the magazine is about cars because it is called 'car'. We can also see a tagline which tells us that this magazine is the uk's best designed magazine.

The main image is of a very flashy car and this makes the whole of the front cover feel more sophisticated. It appeals to the target audience of men around the ages of 18-40 and due to the sophistication, men of a higher socio-economic status would be drawn into it. These are also the people that would be more likely to afford the cars shown in this magazine.

The cover lines use a capital, and very bold font all in very masculine colours which appeal to the target audience. They do not include a lot of writing, and there is not many of them, and this is used so that it doesn't distract from the main image. The main cover line is in capitals and is in a very masculine colour, and uses the same colour as the masthead, with contrasts with the bright red colour of the car to make it stand out even more. There is also a cover line at the bottom of the page, informing the reader of other cars that are featured in the magazine.

In comparison to Cosmopolitan, this magazine is very different, yet targets it's audience in the same way. For example, Cosmopolitan uses very feminine colours  such as pink's and purple's on it's masthead and cover lines, whereas, Cars uses masculine colours such as grey's and red's. Cars also doesn't have as many cover lines as Cosmopolitan, but both relate to topics that their target audience would be interested in. Cosmopolitan also uses a main image of a pop star, who in which is looking directly at the camera to draw in the audience, whereas, Cars is using an object to draw in their audience. In contrast to the male orientated magazine Cars, Cosmopolitan is a lot more of a gossip based magazine, whereas Cars is actually more facts based.

Female orientated magazine cover.

Cosmopolitan.

The masthead is slightly covered by the main image, and this shows that the Cosmopolitan brand of magazines is well known, so people will know what it is without having to see the full title. It is also in capitals and in a bright pink font, which attracts the female audince. The fact that it is in capitals also makes it stand out, even though it is partly covered by the main image.

The main image is of a well known singer, Mollie King from The Saturdays. She is well known and is relatable to people in the age bracket that this magazine is targeting. She is just an average girl, and is between the 18-30 age range that this magazine is targeting also. The main image of Mollie uses direct address, which means she is looking directly into the eyes of the people looking at the magazine cover, this draws them in. She is also seen to be blowing a kiss to the readers, as if she knows the readers and/or is friends with them. This and the clothes she is wearing also adds sex appeal, attracting men, so women will want to look like her. People reading this magazine will also be interested in her life and will want to know how she keeps fit, who she is dating etc.

The cover lines use very feminine pinks and reds, which are typical lipstick colours and show that this magazine is targeted at women. The cover lines are also about stories that people in this target audience would be interested in. For example, there is an article about loving your body and happy hair, and these are things that the target audience want to know about. The font used in the cover lines is also very feminine and sophisticated, and the main cover line is using a font in which looks like somebody has wrote it using lipstick, which appeals to the audience.

Big Stan - Visual, technical and audio codes.

Big Stan.

Visual codes:
At the start of this film we see a lot of men in suits and in judges robes with briefcases. This indicates to us that the first setting in this film is in a courtroom. This is also indicated through the serious facial expressions of the people in this scene, and this is typical of a courtroom setting, as nobody is going to be seen to be laughing etc. Some of the people in the courtroom also wear glasses, which we usually associate with intelligence, and lawyers/barristers and known to be intelligent.

Technical codes:
Mid shots are used to show the faces of those in the scene, along with a bit of the setting, and are also used to show who is talking. Long shots are used to allow the audience to establish setting, and in this case, we are then able to confirm that the setting is a courtroom. A bird's eye view shot is used to show one of the characters, who in which has just lost his court case, so this may indicate how he is now powerless and weak. Close up's are used when we want to see who is talking, and their facial expressions when they are talking, then we as an audience are able to know the emotions of the character.

Audio codes:
Diagetic narration is used at the start of the film, which helps to lead into the main content of the film. There is also a lot of non-diagetic music at the start of the film, and as it is upbeat, this almost sets the tone of the film as being a happy one, or makes us think that the film contains some comedy. Diagetic sound is used throughout when people are talking, and there is also a lot of diagetic background noise.

Bad Education - Visual, technical and audio codes.

Bad Education.

Visual codes:
In this sitcom, we see alot of different visual codes, all in which help us to establish what the show is about. For example, a lot of younger people are seen to be wearing the same school uniform, and the older people all tend to be wearing quite smart clothing, such as shirts, ties, suits, etc. So, we as an audience are able to tell that this show must be set in a school environment, with school pupils and teachers as the cast. We are able to tell the pupils from the teachers by what they are wearing, and these are the things that are typically associated with teachers/students. We then actually go on to see the setting. We can then confirm it is a school, by the typical school set out, and one scene is also in the staffroom in which teachers are known to go at breaks and lunch.

Technical codes:
There are a lot of mid and close up shots, in which allows us to see the particular persons body language and facial expressions. Mid shots also mean that the audience is able to start establishing the setting, and mid shots are used when two people are having a conversation, to show who is talking and also their facial expressions whilst talking. Long shots and extreme long shots are used to allow us to then fully establish the setting, therefore, we then definitely know that it is set in a school environment. These shots also show give us a better insight into the persons body language, and sometimes, it can be someones facial expressions or body language that actually make the audience laugh.

Audio codes:
We can hear a lot of diagetic sound throughout this show, for example, there is a lot of diagetic conversation between pupils and teachers, which is typical of a school setting. Diagetic sound is used a lot in this way, as there is frequent speech between pupils and teachers. Non-diagetic music is also played frequently through the show , particularly at the beginning credits, and throughout whenever the scene changes. This music fits in well with this programme because it is upbeat and makes people feel happy, this helps to achieve the purpose of this show, which is to make people laugh. People tend to watch these types of sitcoms because they want to cheer themselves up, feel happy and use it as an escapism from everyday stress, and the music along with the dialogue helps to achieve this.

Audience task.

Girlfriends.

Girlfriends is a television shows aimed at single women between the ages of 16 to 35. We can tell this by the girls featured in the show, as we know that single girls between these ages will be able to relate to them and their relationship problems etc. This programme meets the uses and gratifications of personal identity, entertainment and social integration.
This programme meets personal identity as the people watching are able to relate to the girls in the show, and therefore can identify themselves as the audience. This programme meets entertainment as it is quite humorous and is an escapism from everyday life. It entertains through the content of the show, and how people can laugh at the dodgy dates, and it also entertains through the catchy music that is in the background. We want to know these girls stories, and we are drawn into the show and have to watch on as we want to know who they choose etc.
This programme is constructed as it is clear that the show is put together to highlight the funny bits and the parts that their intended audience would want to see. The parts have been put together in this particular way on purpose, and the music that has been edited over is used to add to the entertainment of the show. This show in particular has been mediated so that we focus on certain aspects of the show, such as them going to the lads parents houses, and this allows us to make assumptions and to draw conclusions, such as letting us guess who they are going to pick in the end.
